Bilirubin
The normally
functioning liver removes bilirubin from the blood
and reincorporates it into bile stored in the gall bladder. In the
malfunctioning liver this function may be impaired causing higher than normal
levels of bilirubin in the blood stream (serum bilirubin). Liver
function tests commonly use diagnostic bilirubin as a
standard preparation to compare with serum bilirubin
levels and measure liver function.
In recent
years several studies on the biochemical properties of bilirubin
present strong evidence that the compound plays a beneficial role in the body,
particularly as an endogenous (naturally generated within the body)
antioxidant. Antioxidants are part of the human bodies
natural defense system, which operates to scavenge and quench destructive
oxygen radicals. The in
vitro antioxidant properties of bilirubin were
delineated largely by Stocker and co-workers in the late 1980’s.
Bilirubin supplementation provides health benefit
to persons at risk of heart attack including smokers. Bilirubin
has been shown reduce the oxidation of Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), which has
been implicated in plaque formation within blood vessels leading to heart
disease. Frei et al found that bilirubin was more effective than other endogenous
antioxidants, at protecting lipids from peroxyl
radicals. A recent
