Bile Acids

Bile acids are the end product of cholesterol utilization in the liver of vertebrates. Bile acids are produced in the liver, stored in the gall bladder and secreted into the gut to aid the absorption of dietary fats. A large percentage of these bile acids are reabsorbed by the gut and returned to the liver via the blood.

Bile acids are essential for the digestion and absorption of lipids (fats) and lipid soluble vitamins. They are the major regulators of cholesterol production and cholesterol extraction in humans. They are also potential carriers of liver specific drugs and new cholesterol-lowering agents.

Cholic Acid

Cholic acid is a naturally occurring human bile acid. It is extracted commercially from cattle bile.

The primary commercial use of cholic acid is as an intermediate in the synthesis of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), which is a pharmaceutical product used for the dissolution of gallstones and the prevention and treatment of liver diseases.

Cholic acid is also used in traditional Asian medicine and it is one of the ingredients used to formulate Artificial Bezoar.

Chenodeoxycholic Acid

Chenodeoxycholic Acid (CDCA) is a naturally occurring human bile acid. It can be produced synthetically from cholic acid or purified from pig bile. CDCA is also used as an intermediate in the production of UDCA. Both CDCA and UDCA are active pharmaceuticals, which assist in the dissolution and prevention of cholesterol gallstones in humans.

Hyodeoxycholic Acid

Hyodeoxycholic Acid (HDCA) is a naturally occurring human and pig bile acid. HDCA is used as an  intermediate in the production of steroid drugs.

Deoxycholic Acid (DCA) is a naturally occurring human bile acid. It is extracted commercially from cattle and sheep bile. DCA is used as an ingredient in pharmaceutical formulations, artificial bezoar and other Asian medicine formulations. DCA is also used as a biological detergent.
